Mike Cheesley's 25th year with TSKC

Pictured is Mike Cheesley Instructor of Teignmouth Shotokan Karate Club being presented with a surprise award as a long standing member of the club in recognition of Mikes 25th Year with the Teignmouth based club.
 
The award was presented by assistant instructor Paul Hodgson on behalf of the club members, where past and present students gave there congratulations for this remarkable achievement.
 
Paul commented that since the club was formed in the early 80's Mike has worked incredibly  hard both in and out of the dojo and Paul would like to personally thank Mike for his hard work and effort with the clubs development and success, Paul went on to say that " Mike has done a first class job with the running of the club over the last 25 years and I am pleased Mike's focus has been on teaching quality karate and not commercializing the club, and that’s why the club will still be going in another 25 years”.

 
 

 

Kata training session, Broadmeadow Sports Centre, Sunday 4th of October 2009

Thanks and well done to thoses junior and senior students who attended the Kata training on Sunday the 4th of October.  The 2 hour session was spent practising basic Heian Kata and Shotokan Kata Gojushiho sho.

Kata training session, Broadmeadow Sports Centre, Sunday 29th March 2009

Federation of Shotokan Karate South West Championships 2008

Held on the 8th of November at Winners gym, Torquay the FSK south west championships was attended by a squad of eleven from TSKC many of whom had travelled to Essex the previous week for the International open.  Thanks as ever to Sensei Dave Owen for the invitation to take part in this event.

TKA International Open Championships 2008

Hornchurch Sports Centre, Essex was the venue for this years TKA International Open which took place on Sunday the 2nd of November.  The Teignmouth squad was made up of some experienced competitors and some novices enjoying there first karate competition.

Teignmouth competitors and placiing as follows: Cara Falcau, Dom Falcau, Emma Maidens, Mel Staton 3rd kumite, George Thompson, Bob Tranckle 3rd kumite, Rupert Hoare 3rd kata, Paul Hodgson 3rd kata, Mike Cheesley 3rd kata.


 

Torbay Regatta 10k Road Race

 Teignmouth Shotokan Karate Club instructors Paul Hodgson and Mike Cheesley and black belt student Dom Falcau entered the Torbay Regetta 10k road race on Sunday the 24th of August.
 It was the first time any of the three had ran the 10k distance and Mike bought the trio home in a time of 45mintues 31 seconds.

FSK Summer Course

2007 Winners Challenge Karate Competition

Grateful thanks to sensei Dave Owen for the invitation to take part in the 2007 Winners challenge karate competition at Winners gym, Torquay on the 23rd of November. Clubs in attendance were sensei Dave Owen’s Central dojo, sensei Mark Shaw’s Kihaku karate club and Teignmouth Shotokan karate club.  For more photos click here

Toyakwai Karate Association International Open Competition, 2007
Image 1 10 members of TSKC competed at the TKA international Open at Gorsebrook leisure centre, Dagenham on Sunday the 28th of October.  The Teignmouth squad was made up of Alice Payne, Mike Cheesley, Dom Falcau, Cara Falcau, Josh Twigg, Graham Vincer, Bobby treweek, Bob Tranckle, Rupert Hoare and Sophie Nofal, with club sensei Paul Hodgson taking on the role of coach for the day.

Funakoshi World Karate Championships

Pictured Left the TKA kata squad at the Funakoshi Karate Association World karate champioships held this year in Crawley, Essex on Sunday the 14th of October.  The squad came away with 10 gold, 2 sliver and 2 bronze medals. (far right TSKC's Alice Payne)

Jeans and jacket nght, 1st of June 2007
Image 1 A small group from the  club met for a “Jeans and Jacket” training session on th 1st of June. The sessions are designed to pressure test the student’s karate out of the usual training environment and they were put through various drills consisting of Ground Work, Grappling and Boxing Drills.

Spring Course, April 2007

TSKC's Alice Payne attended the KUGB spring course at Clennon valley, Paignton in March.  Alice attended all the lessons (nine over 5 days) and earned an impressive fourth place trophy in the kata competition - Well done Alice!

News from the Toyakwai Karate Association
On March the 3rd the Toyakwai Karate Association was part of a small England squad of juniors and seniors sent to the Malta Karate Open. There were 467 individuals  from 16 Countries and 28 Organizations competing in  kata and
kumite of very high level.
 THE TOYAKWAI SQUAD RETURNED WITH 9 INDIVIDUAL GOLD MEDALS,  5 INDIVIDUAL SILVER MEDALS, 4 INDIVIDUAL BRONZE MEDALS, 2 TEAM GOLD MEDALS AND 1 TEAM BRONZE MEDAL. 

Social night
Thanks to those of you who joined in our night out on the 9th of march,  hope you enjoyed yourselves and keep an eye on the site for the date of our next evening out!

Fight Night 2
TSKC's Paul Hodgson stepped into the ring again on Friday the 23rd of February to compete in Fight Night  2 at Valbonnes nightclub, Torquay.  Paul fought in both the contact karate and the K1 knockout tournament.  to view some of the highlights of paul's fights click here

Dan grading. 3rd of December, Bethnel Green, London.

Three students of the Teignmouth Shotokan Karate Club traveled to Bethnal Green East London to take part in the recent TKA Dan grading.

The club would like to congratulate Dom Falcau for passing his 1st Dan, also Alice Payne

and Mathew Parrish for grading to 2nd Dan.

TKA International open championships 2006

TSKC's Paul Hodgson, Mike Cheesley and Alice Payne entered the TKA International open championships in Dagenham, Essex on the October 29th. Congratulations to Alice who won her first trophy as a senior competitor, placing third in the Ladies black belt kata event.

Winners2000 FIGHTNIGHT

 

TSKC's Paul Hodgson was selected to take part in Winners2000 and Central dojo's FIGHTNIGHT Championship on 23rd of September at Winners2000

 

Paul fought in an 8 man elimination tournement amongst a crop of outstanding competitors, the evening also hosted exhibition bouts featuring some of the best trained most highly skilled athletes in the bay.

KUGB Summer Course, Lancaster

 

Well done Alice for attending the 2006 KUGB Summer course at Lancaster university in August. Pictured left is Alice with karate England kumite competitor and former KUGB grand champion Matt Price.

FSK South West Championships

Well done to the squad who took part in the FSK South West Championships on July 1st.  The squad did well with everyone getting through the first rounds in kumite, A special mention for Cara who proved to be an intelligent fighter scoring maximum points against her early round opponents and unlucky not to have placed in the top three, Well done Cara we had a number of competitors remark on how well you fought keep it up!. Also sensei Paul placed 1st in the senior mens Kata.

Squad training, April 23rd 2006

 

Well done to all students who attended the squad training at Dawlish leisure centre on 23rd of April.  The next squad session will be at Taunton dojo on the 14th of May.

KUGB spring course, April 2006

Torbay leisure centre, Paignton was the venue for the 2006 KUGB Spring Course. With nine  training sessions between the 10th and 14th of April.  Teignmouth SKC's Alice Payne was again a fantastic represenative of the club, training every day, attending the lecture and entering the kata competition.  Alice is pictured right with Sensei Terry O'Neill.

 

Also training on the course was Karate England kata squad member Jonathan Mottram, pictured left with Lydia and Alice.

Monday, 20th February 2006

 

A half term venue change from our regular dojo at the Arts centre to West lawn gym promted us to hold our first 'jeans and jacket night' of 2006. With the emphasis this time on bag and pad work, all those who attended enjoyed the class.

 

This change of venue was for one night only and we will be back in the Arts centre on Monday the 27th.

Open Course, Sunday 19th February 2006

 

Thanks to all those who attended the open course at Broadmeadow Sports Centre, Teignmouth on Sunday 19th of February.   

 

Clubs in attendance included, Teignmouth SKC,  St Marychurch KC,  Yoshikwai SKC from Taunton and members of local PUMA and TAGB Tae Kwon Do clubs.  Hope to see you all again next month!!

 

Our second mention in the Memory lane section of the Teignmouth news was in February 2006 reminding us that it was 10 years ago that club members represented the association at the English karate governing body championships at Crystal Palace. Brazilian jiu jitsu competition in Torquay

 

TSKC's Paul Hodgson received an invitation to take part in a Brazilain jiu jitsu and submission wrestling tournament hosted by Torbay BJJ club on Saturday the 10th of December.  Although this was Paul's first BJJ competition as usual he gave a good account of himself winning 3 out his five fights and we would like to thank Torbay BJJ for the invite and wish them every success in the future.

Jeans and jacket night, December 2005

 

Thanks to all of you that attended our 'jeans and jacket night',  this was the last lesson of 2005 and a great way to end the year.  Merry Christmas and happy new year to all TSKC students and friends and don't forget training starts again on January the 9th 2006, see you then!!

FSK South West Invitational Championships

 

Thanks to Central dojo sensei Dave Owen for the invitation to compete in these championships held at Torbay Leisure Centre on Sunday 19th of june 2005

Congratulations to Dom Falcau, pictured left with sensei Dave Owen, on taking first place in the over 5ft junior kumite and also to Paul Hodgson on his 2nd place in the black belt kata section.
